One Laptop Per Child on Google EngEDU Some pretty incredible innovation going on here. History in the making. A laptop for $100? That will automatically connect up to 2km to other XO-1's, and will skip until if finds a server? Unbelievable. Open source throughout. AMD processor, no hard drive, flash ram. Uses Solaris Open Boot as a prototype for the boot PROM. Sleep/unsleep 100ms. |

.............Update May 11th, 2007
I am in Solaris Class. To help study, I'm putting all my class notes on this web site during all my spare time. To make things even
more challenging, I am doing it live on my own server, in vi, remotely through SSH. I'm also making up some
MP3 files and CDROMs, so I can safely review when I run and drive to/from class. I use Audacity for all my audio editing /creation and my microphone is an Aiwa CM-P11 that I purchased in Narita, Japan.

Microsoft backing down on patent stance? I've concluded that the most staunch MSFT supporters own substantial MSFT stock and many times have formed opinions on software even though they have never used it.
Update May 5th, 2007
It is the weekend and I now have some more time to add useful material to this tech page. I'm editing this page remotely, using the vi editor, accessed from the command line using Secure Shell. I edit the file directly, so there is no FTP involved. VI improved (VIM) has syntax higlighting, which transfers fine across the PuTTY SSH client for (gag) Windows. I'm using Windows because the laptop I have is locked down.
Router Problems Fixed
May 5th, 2007: My apologies to all my fans out there, as this site and others were inaccessible for a period of time. The problem was due to a faulty Linksys WRT45G Router.
Linux on a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4467 Laptop
First I tried White Box, but when I realized that the distro was over 2 years old, I performed a lspci command and found that
almost all of the hardware was listed as "unknown". This means that there were no hardware specific drivers for my new laptop.
I had to find a distro of Linux that had the drivers I needed. I went to distrowatch.com and chose the most popular-Ubuntu. I downloaded the ISO file for 6.10, Edgy Eft at 698 Megabytes. I tried the CDROM only version and the lspci recognized all but the realtek 10baseT Ethernet NIC. Knowing that Ubuntu was going to work with my new hardware, I proceeded to have it format over the Whitebox Partition (I also have an 80GB partition for Vista on the same dual-boot laptop) and install itself.
A few hours later, I got both 10baseT and Wireless Ethernet working
After manually configuring the ethernet cards with the ifconfig and route commands with several option iterations, I was able to ping, surf the net and SSH into my basement server. I am editing this with VI running over secure shell behind a firewalled router. Pretty cool.
Ubuntu Kicks the Pants off Vista (once you get it working)
Aside from the highly technical setup requirements to get Ubuntu Linux to work, the browser pages load extremely fast. No more waiting. It seems like at work, the pages load slower and slower with each year and network upgrade. You won't have this problem with DSL and Linux.
Starting Apache Server Manually
first get into webmin and kill the apache config that is already running, then enter:
/usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl -f /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf
Finding all processes running on your Linux server
chkconfig --list this will show what starts up in the different runlevels.
Using PROFTP
GSSFTP may be running already. Go into xinetd or inetd and modify the configuration not to start.

[30/Mar/2005:03:15:12 -0900] "get
/scripts/..%252f../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir" 501 334 This is a worm trying
to rename cmd.exe. This is not a problem for WinME, 2K or XP. For Win 95 and 98,
it is a problem. Win2k doesn't allow access to cmd.exe and even if it was
deleted or renamed, it magically reappears on reboot. Also, Apache server is
safe from these worms.

Growing basil in Alaska
How to grow basil in Alaska! I've grown bigger basil than anyone else in the state! Here is my secret recipe- collect about 2 dozen bags of leaves in the fall. The best type of leaves are ones that have fallen on wet asphalt and have begun to decompose. Shred them into a large, round pile. Cover this pile with 6 mil polyethylene sheet. Let sit until spring. You will see a layer of dried "foam" on the pile- this is a fungus that is known as leaf mold. Earthworms love this stuff. Shred once again and mix into a garden row about 3 feet wide. Google "uaf strawberries" and read the PDF on growing everbearing strawberries in Alaska. Follow their instruction on making the plastic row covers. Then cut x's in the plastic and plant your basil starts. Water once with the green-blue all-purpose fertilizer or organic fertilzers such as compost tea. Do not water any more-let the vapor recondense into the soil. You will find that this basil grows so fast you can't harvest it fast enough. It literally pushes the plastic open.

Composting Secrets
I live in Alaska and have a thermophilic ~155degF pile. They say it can't be done here because it is too cold. I've also had a leaf pile that has melted snow through the winter. Visit my website to find out more. A very important concept is VAPOR PRESSURE! Cover with 6 mil poly sheet after shredding. Shred every 3-4 days for thermophilic- but my leaf mold I shred once. It fully composts over the WINTER in Alaska! Bins are worthless, just make a HUGE round pile, as you are dealing with the VOLUME vs. AREA equation. Volume is cubic function, area is a squared function. Eweson digester is the ultimate answer. Don't worry about aeration- this is solved by adding fluffy stuff such as leaves, shredded office paper, newspaper strips or wood chips. Even if you don't turn it, the pile will remain aerobic if you have the fluff. If it is pure manure or grass clippings, then you will have trouble with clumping and anaerobic/smell/slime. For bacterial decomposition, you must mix carbonaceous and high nitrogen so they are in close proximity. There is much truth in the aquarium water. Don't use tap water without first letting it sit like you would for fish, the chlorine kills bacteria! You won't need water at all if you use the plastic, because you won't lose the water to the atmosphere. Think "heat of vaporization" when you water your pile. How much natural gas would it take to boil that 5 gallons of water you just sprayed on your pile? This same amount of heat will be lost from your pile through vaporization, only not as fast as through the boiling process. A vapor barrier will completely stop this process if it is adequately sealed. You will find that your pile will have plenty of moisture in the form of STEAM/VAPOR! This also "cooks" the ingredients so that they are softer and shred easier the next time you try and shred. One thing to keep in mind if you are vermicomposting is that earthworms like partially composted material. They eat the bacteria and fungi that break down the organic waste. Earthworms will "smell" a bag of leaves decomposing and will try like the dickens to get into it. They will also hug the surface of a hot manure compost pile when it gets down to freezing temperatures outside.
Nettles, aerated compost tea, nitrogenase, molybdenum, azotobacter are all words to research/look up on wiki!
Nettles are the best compost activator. They make great compost tea by themselves.
Molasses has molybdenum, which is a required element for the Nitrogenase catalyst. Aquarium water has the different types of bacteria that convert NH3 ammonia (fish waste) to Nitrite NO3 to Nitrate NO2, which is what plants can use. Azotobacter convert N2 to NH3 utilizing Adenosine Triphosphate.
